Public Transit Training: Direct Services Support

Public Transit Training offers training in public transportation to clients who would like to access a location of their choosing perhaps a new job site, college, and/or safety training.

Social Impact Services also supports clients in navigating public safety and driving resources should they choose to obtain their driver’s license.

Social Impact Services is a proud partner of the Blue Envelope Program: Supplies are distributed to all clients and the public is welcome to pick-up supplies from the agency as well. For more information go to:

Social Impact Services will assess: the location the client is requesting support in accessing,  their current experience in public transportation, safety skills, the number of training hours,  resources, and planning required to effectively prepare a personalized training for the participant. Public Transit Training is offered as a stand-alone service for clients who are not participants of other programs within Social Impact Services and/or can be offered as a part of  ILS/TDS/Day Program objectives if the person of interest is an existing client. However, an existing client of Social Impact Services can request this additional program if he/she chooses to focus on other objectives for an existing program they are participating in. Public Transit Training is typically a one-week training to the desired location; however, it is personalized to the client’s needs.  

 

The curriculum of Public Transit Training includes, but is not limited to: 

  • 1:1 support, one-time basis, typically one-week authorization (personalized to meet  client’s needs)  

  • Personalized public transportation route 

  • Safety skills, stranger awareness,

  • Landmark recognition

  • Self-Advocacy Skills

  • Estimating time arrivals, time management, planning, pulling bus cords 

  • Accessing MTS Transit Store and Resources (disability ID, pronto card, mobile applications, maps)  

  • Shadowing: evaluating the individual’s effective and safe performance of the route 

  • Final report detailing client evaluation which may include other means of transportation  recommendations  

  • Other Services and resources: Social Impact Services partners with community organizations, subsidy programs and licensed professionals that may provide additional support to a client given the nature of support required. 

Process to become a client:

Clients of interest must be receiving services/funding from San Diego Regional Center (SDRC). If the client of interest is not receiving services and would like to begin the intake process with SDRC, they may visit https://www.sdrc.org/apply for additional information. Once the client of interest is approved with the San Diego Regional Center for services and/or has a planning team meeting with SDRC to discuss his/her interest in this program with their assigned San Diego Regional Center Service Coordinator and/or the Program Manager of their assigned unit should their case be temporarily unassigned, the Service Coordinator/Program Manager may contact Social Impact Services directly for a referral.
