Refugee Integration and Employability Project
refugee integration and employability project in hull
BrightSparks has successfully run our Refugee Integration and Employability Project in Hull., funded by a grant from the People's Postcode Trust.
The project provided English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and employability support to 20 adult refugees who had been recently resettled in Hull as part of the United Nations Gateway Protection Programme. Refugees from both Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo attended. Through the course we supported this vulnerable group to develop their language skills, establish links and form networks with other refugees and helped them to develop their confidence and skills to enter the labour market.
The group were supported to identify their transferable skills and understand what a valuable contribution they are able to make to UK life and in particular their local community. The refugees are keen to work and felt empowered to seek opportunities and develop their skills.
Fatima Darwash arrived from Syria in 2017. She attended the course with her husband and had worked as a hairdresser in her home country. Suha Ali had been a nursery teacher and has ambitions to work in the UK once her language skills increase. Both women said that they felt the course had given them an insight into where to apply for and look for work. They said that the course also helped them to support their families to understand the UK education system. Both women felt that Hull is a very friendly place and were grateful for the welcome they have received and funded courses such as this. They are studying English for Speakers of Other Languages and are keen to progress.
Course tutor Katie Simpson said "I was delighted to work on this project to add support to the existing programme and provide access to education over the summer, when often there are limited opportunities to learn. This helps refugees to increase their language skills, develop support networks and feel more settled."
